About the position

The Program Manager for the Human Rights Initiative (HRI) at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) plays a crucial role in managing operations and research projects that promote human rights as a key component of U.S. foreign policy. This position involves overseeing program components, managing budgets, conducting stakeholder outreach, and organizing events, while also contributing to research and strategic discussions. The Program Manager will work closely with the program director and manage interns and junior staff, acting as a proxy for administrative tasks as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the program's projects and provide assistance to the project's director and senior staff.
  • Organize public and private events, conferences, and workshops related to the project.
  • Coordinate the publication of new analysis and content for the project.
  • Represent the project to other research programs and external stakeholders.
  • Manage external communications, including maintaining contacts databases and responding to inquiries.
  • Develop promotional materials and strategic communication plans for outreach.
  • Manage program and project finances, including budgets and expense management.
  • Draft program correspondence and official agreements.
  • Support senior program staff with logistics and scheduling.
  • Recruit, hire, and manage program interns.
  • Compile background research materials and develop fundraising proposals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of related experience in program/project management, including budget or grant management.
  • Superior communication skills and good judgment.
  • Excellent organization, time management, and attention to detail.
  • Strong ability to present information and respond to questions from various groups.
  • Ability to work closely with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to operate independently and in a team under pressure.

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduate-level study of international relations, human rights, or a related field.
  • Experience managing US government grants and projects.
  • Knowledge of US foreign policy, human rights norms, and global issues.
  • Interest in HRI's core focus areas.
  • Event management experience with high-level VIP audiences.
