About the position

The Program Manager, Safety & Performance Improvement is responsible for leading initiatives to enhance workplace safety within the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. This role involves analyzing safety data, collaborating with various departments, and implementing targeted safety programs to mitigate risks and improve overall safety performance. The incumbent will also manage the Safety Management System and oversee investigations of incidents to develop corrective actions and promote a strong safety culture across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and manages safety performance improvement programs and initiatives.
  • Conducts trend analyses to identify and track risks in partnership with relevant departments.
  • Develops risk mitigation strategies and coordinates with cross-functional teams for implementation.
  • Creates effective safety communications to engage all employees and enhance safety culture.
  • Manages responses to safety audit reports and investigation findings, developing Corrective Action Plans (CAPs).
  • Facilitates timely responses to inquiries and implements safety recommendations from oversight entities.
  • Makes recommendations for enhancements to bus operator training programs based on observations and analyses.
  • Audits safety data for consistency and thoroughness in investigations and disciplinary actions.
  • Manages the accident appeals board and conducts daily reviews of incidents and accidents.
  • Proactively identifies trends in root causes of incidents and collaborates with management to address them.
  • Updates and develops standard operating procedures related to safety and conducts change management activities.
  • Coordinates and facilitates safety meetings with leadership and employees to discuss safety issues and solutions.
  • Manages staff dedicated to planning and executing safety programs and assesses their effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Transportation, or related field.
  • In lieu of a Bachelor's Degree, a high school diploma and four years of relevant safety experience will be considered.
  • A minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience in transportation safety management, including incident investigation.
  • At least two years in a supervisory capacity responsible for developing and executing safety initiatives.
  • Valid Driver's Permit is required.
  • CPR Certification is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • World Safety Organization (WSO) Certified Safety Specialist or Certified Safety Manager.

Benefits

  • Full-time position with a competitive salary range of $99K - $125K per year.
