About the position

The Program Officer in the Genomics Research Branch at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) plays a crucial role in directing, planning, and supporting research programs focused on the intersection of genomics and mental health. This position involves managing a portfolio of grants and contracts, collaborating with various NIH institutes, and contributing to the advancement of research aimed at understanding the genetic underpinnings of mental illnesses. The role requires a strong understanding of biomedical research and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively to develop new initiatives and impact national research priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Initiate, plan, develop, and direct NIMH extramural research programs.
  • Serve as Program Officer for a portfolio of grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements.
  • Participate in collaborative activities with other NIH institutes and Federal departments or agencies.
  • Review completeness of applications for research grants or contracts.
  • Study scientific literature to relate proposed research projects to current research in the field.
  • Provide advice in program planning, solicitation, and evaluation related to research grants and interagency agreements.
  • Organize and conduct workshops, conferences, and symposia to foster program aims and facilitate communication among investigators.
  • Review and evaluate periodic and interim progress reports to determine effectiveness of support and achievement of objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in behavioral or social sciences, or related disciplines.
  • Experience in planning, organizing, and conducting behavioral or social science health-related research.
  • Understanding of the history, interests, and dynamics of organizations conducting health research.
  • For GS-12: Experience in reviewing applications for research grants or contracts and responding to issues regarding proposals.
  • For GS-13: Experience in reviewing technical and scientific merit of applications and providing program planning advice.
  • For GS-14: Experience in managing scientific and administrative reviews of grant applications and planning program activities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior research experience in human genomics related to CNS disorders.
  • Familiarity with current literature in the field of genomics and mental health.
