About the position

The Program Officer for Power at the San Francisco Foundation is a pivotal role focused on grantmaking and strategy implementation aimed at advancing racial equity and economic inclusion in the San Francisco Bay Area. This position is responsible for the Power Pathway, which includes strengthening grassroots organizing by community and faith-based organizations, developing leadership among BIPOC organizers, and promoting integrated voter engagement and political power-building. The Program Officer will particularly emphasize leadership development within grantmaking and strategy implementation, including the coordination of the Women of Color, Women of Power program. In this role, the Program Officer will contribute to the development of pathway strategies, identify program outcomes, and manage key components of strategy development and implementation. They will develop and implement plans to advance critical elements of the Foundation's equity agenda through civic leadership roles. The position also involves thought leadership and information dissemination, as well as collaboration with other funders, public and private sector leaders, and grantees to raise additional funds and convene around identified programmatic outcomes. The Program Officer will manage the Power Pathways grantmaking portfolio in partnership with the Senior Director of the Power Pathway, working closely with grantees on applications and reports, managing the grantmaking budget, and developing relationships with community organizations. They will provide resource and referral advice, conduct due diligence on grant proposals, and present recommendations to senior staff and the Board of Trustees. Additionally, the Program Officer will engage in political landscape research, organize convenings, and facilitate opportunities to bring various constituencies together to further the Foundation's equity agenda. This position requires a commitment to learning and development, as staff are expected to incorporate learning into their core work. The Program Officer will also collaborate with the Director of Strategic Learning and Evaluations to track and assess progress toward outcomes associated with the pathway strategy and the effectiveness of grants. They will meet with donors and prospective donors to provide information about pathway efforts and grantmaking opportunities in the Bay Area, and will work to develop strong relationships with funder partners and community organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Manage grantmaking and strategy implementation for the Power Pathway.
  • Contribute to the development of pathway strategies and identify program outcomes.
  • Develop and implement plans to advance the Foundation's equity agenda through civic leadership roles.
  • Lead proactive efforts with funders, public and private sector leaders, and grantees.
  • Develop strategy and manage the Power Pathways grantmaking portfolio in partnership with the Senior Director.
  • Provide resource and referral advice and technical assistance to grantees and other foundations.
  • Review, research, and recommend grants, including developing RFPs and evaluating proposals.
  • Conduct political landscape research and provide thought leadership through speaking engagements and articles.
  • Identify and manage opportunities to convene various constituencies to further the Foundation's goals.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Strategic Learning and Evaluations to track and assess progress toward outcomes.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Four years of experience in the public non-profit and/or philanthropic sector.
  • Ability to build successful relationships with local leaders and organizations.
  • Knowledge of grantmaking and managing projects to achieve specified goals.
  • Excellent active listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of organizational development operations of nonprofits.
  • Finance and budget experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to lead collaboratives of multiple funders and leaders.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in community organizing, leadership development, and integrated voter engagement.
  • Familiarity with a power-building approach.
  • Technical skills in Microsoft environments and online grantmaking tools.
