About the position

The Program Research Specialist 1 position is part of the New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation agency, specifically within the Division of Environmental Stewardship and Planning. This role focuses on statistical analysis and data management related to the State Park System, including the collection, evaluation, and reporting of various data sets to support program operations and decision-making. The position requires collaboration with business units to develop analytical models and improve existing systems and processes.

Responsibilities

  • Work with business units to develop and build models in support of analytic use cases.
  • Review and suggest improvements to current or planned systems and processes.
  • Conduct surveys and perform data extraction, aggregation, and quality checks from multiple sources.
  • Format raw data, perform preliminary analysis, proof data and reports, and implement quality control measures.
  • Document studies and preliminary analysis performed.
  • Compare disparate datasets to determine similarities, differences, and trends.
  • Conduct economic or market analysis in support of capital and planning projects.
  • Summarize results into accurate and informative reports of data analysis for agency staff.
  • Collaborate with staff to develop innovative business solutions.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree or higher including or supplemented by nine semester credit hours in biostatistics, data analysis, or related fields for Trainee 1.
  • A bachelor's degree or higher with nine semester credit hours in relevant fields and one year of professional research experience for Trainee 2.
  • A bachelor's degree with nine semester credit hours in relevant fields and two years of professional research experience, or a master's degree with one year of experience for Program Research Specialist 1.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with IBM SPSS, R, or equivalent statistical software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Access and Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with web-based survey applications such as Survey Monkey or Survey123.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro).
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS (ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Pro) and ArcGIS Online.
