About the position

The Program Supervisor - Unit Manager oversees the operations of the Libby Unit within the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC). This role is responsible for managing state trust lands, implementing forestry and land management programs, and ensuring compliance with state and federal laws. The position requires strong leadership, operational management, and the ability to balance resource protection with revenue generation for trust beneficiaries. The incumbent will also engage in personnel management, budgeting, and conflict resolution while representing the DNRC in various capacities.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Unit's operations and accomplish multiple division goals and objectives.
  • Apply knowledge of natural resource disciplines and DNRC policies to manage unit activities.
  • Conduct performance appraisals and provide guidance to unit personnel.
  • Participate in leadership team meetings to develop planning and policy procedures.
  • Develop administrative, operational, and budget objectives for the Unit.
  • Engage in problem-solving and conflict resolution at the NWLO and Unit level.
  • Make decisions on complex projects balancing resource protection and revenue generation.
  • Represent management in communications with various stakeholders and the public.
  • Administer land-use leases, licenses, and permits to generate trust revenue.
  • Monitor compliance with natural resource laws and regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in natural resource management or related field.
  • 3-4 years of related natural resource management experience.
  • 3-4 years of supervisory or management experience, preferably within DNRC.
  • In-depth knowledge of DNRC's missions, programs, and relevant laws.
  • Strong administrative, operational, budgeting, and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in fire management and control strategies.
  • Knowledge of wildlife management and habitat conservation.
