About the position

The Database Administrator III at Envision Healthcare plays a crucial role in the planning, design, implementation, operational support, and maintenance of all Progress databases, as well as other databases such as SQL Server, MySQL, RDS, and Azure. This position is essential in a 24x7 high-availability production environment, ensuring that the database systems are performing optimally and securely to meet business requirements. The administrator will be responsible for monitoring the database environments, ensuring their performance, availability, and security, which are critical for supporting various business operations. In this role, the Database Administrator III will maintain and enhance multiple databases that support a variety of critical business systems throughout the enterprise. Real-time availability is paramount, and the administrator will proactively monitor the database systems to ensure services are available with minimal downtime, especially during maintenance periods. Troubleshooting and resolving issues related to Progress and other database systems will be a key responsibility, which may involve engaging with vendors or internal staff to quickly restore services. The position also entails patching, upgrading, and maintaining database environments while adhering to strict Change Control mechanisms to minimize disruption to end-users. The administrator will provide frequent metrics and statistics on the database environments to executive leadership, create and maintain policies and procedures for database administration, and manage usage in alignment with the overall Corporate Security posture. Collaboration with business users to establish Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for all database services across multiple environments (DEV/QA/UAT/PROD) is also a critical aspect of this role. Additionally, the Database Administrator III will provide guidance and direction to junior members of the DBA team and will be available for rotational on-call support after hours, both scheduled and unscheduled.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the maintenance and performance of multiple databases that support a variety of critical business systems throughout the enterprise.
  • Proactively monitor the database systems to ensure services are available with minimum downtime when maintenance is necessary.
  • Responsible for troubleshooting and resolution of Progress and other database systems, including the engagement of appropriate vendors and/or internal staff to rapidly resolve and restore services to the enterprise.
  • Responsible for patching, upgrades and maintenance of database environments leveraging strict Change Control mechanisms to ensure minimal disruption to the end-users.
  • Responsible for providing frequent metrics/statistics on the database environments to executive leadership.
  • Create and maintain policies, procedures and associated training plans for database administration.
  • Manage appropriate usage that aligns with the overall Corporate Security posture.
  • Work with vendors, outsourcers and contractors to evaluate database products and services that may enhance the current production environment(s), and/or provide clarity on a future roadmaps for the varying platforms.
  • Collaborate with the business users to establish Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for all database services across multiple environments (e.g. DEV/QA/UAT/PROD).
  • Provide guidance and direction to junior members of the DBA team.
  • Rotational on-call availability for scheduled/unscheduled after-hours support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from a four-year College or University.
  • 5 or more years of related experience as a Progress DBA; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current Microsoft SQL Certification(s), AWS, Azure, Snowflake certification holders are preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
