About the position

WSP USA is seeking an experienced Project Accountant to provide accounting and financial support to project managers and teams in their Denver, CO office. The role involves managing project costs, budgets, and financial reporting for medium-sized and moderate-level complexity projects, ensuring accuracy and compliance with industry standards. The Project Accountant will work closely with project managers to oversee project financial performance and profitability, and will be responsible for lifecycle project accounting from account creation to project close-out.

Responsibilities

  • Review and evaluate project charges for accuracy and complete cost transfers.
  • Establish and update project funding and maintain project budgets.
  • Generate accurate financial documentation and reporting for infrastructure and transportation projects.
  • Manage and analyze project costs and revenue, ensuring accurate profit and loss calculations.
  • Create project accounts in Oracle and track project budgets, validating invoicing and reconciling payables and receivables.
  • Partner with project managers to establish and update project budgets and make accounting recommendations.
  • Generate project financial reports and escalate any issues to project management as necessary.
  • Authorize access to project accounts and manage expense transfers in compliance with accounting practices.
  • Investigate project variances and submit variance reports to management.
  • Verify contract and change order characteristics for projects, including reading and interpreting contract language.
  • Monitor key indicators for managing problem projects and keep project managers informed of concerns.
  • Ensure draft invoices are accurate and finalize invoice approval with the Project Manager before submission to clients.
  • Evaluate subconsultant invoice submittals for accuracy and maintain purchase orders for subconsultants.
  • Identify and record unpaid contract billings and follow up on delinquent accounts receivable.
  • Attend project-related meetings to inform the team about project financial status and follow up on actions discussed.
  • Create and submit government reports related to projects and compile information for audits as required.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a professional manner.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or a closely-related discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post-education experience in accounting and project contracts.
  • Working knowledge of project accounting principles and practices.
  • Analytical mindset with sound independent judgment in evaluating financial situations.
  • Ability to coordinate efforts with various stakeholders around contract and project requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with accounting and non-accounting audiences.
  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail and results orientation.
  • Proficiency in technical writing, office automation, and accounting software, particularly MS Excel.
