About the position

The Project Accountant at Smoot Construction will manage the financial operations of construction projects, ensuring accuracy and compliance while handling accounts payable management. This role is essential for maintaining financial integrity and operational efficiency within the accounting department, reporting directly to the Accounting Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee financial operations of construction projects from start to finish, ensuring financial accuracy and compliance.
  • Prepare detailed job cost reports and conduct regular budget analysis to monitor actual expenditures against budgets.
  • Handle all aspects of project billings, including the preparation of detailed invoices and managing receivables to ensure timely cash flow.
  • Review, process, and manage contractor, consultant, and vendor invoices, ensuring they are correctly coded to appropriate cost centers and projects.
  • Collaborate with project managers to uphold financial procedures, resolve discrepancies, and provide financial insights for project decisions.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports and job cost forecasts for internal and external stakeholders, including variance and cash flow reports.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Support annual audits by providing necessary account information and documentation.
  • Manage and ensure the integrity of ERP system data; experience with Sage300 is a plus.
  • Actively participate in the continuous improvement of accounting practices and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably in the construction industry, with a focus on project accounting and accounts payable.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and construction accounting practices.
  • Proficiency in accounting software, especially Sage300 (preferred), and Microsoft Excel.
  • Previous Payroll experience in ADP highly preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Effective communication skills, capable of working independently and within a team environment.
