About the position

The Project Accountant at a growing construction company in Northwest Houston is responsible for managing contract billings, job costing, tracking invoices, and ensuring timely payments. This role involves communication with clients, vendors, subcontractors, and the project management team to maintain financial procedures throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Create invoices and change orders according to the contract terms and billing schedule of values.
  • Ensure proper document control for certificates of insurance, lien waivers, close-outs, and other required documents.
  • Manage contract change order process and update the billing system accordingly.
  • Monitor and follow up on A/R collections and report any delinquent accounts.
  • Process and pay subcontractor invoices within the specified timeframe and according to the contract terms.
  • Process job-related vendor invoices and match them with the purchase orders and receipts.
  • Keep track of the costs incurred for each project and determine which projects to bill each month.
  • Review the billings for accuracy and completeness before submitting them to the controller for approval.
  • Create the billing schedule of values for customer at the time of contract execution and obtain customer approval.
  • Create a budget file for each project and import it into the accounting system.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline and experience
  • 2+ years of construction accounting experience in both accounts receivable and payable
  • Knowledge of percent completion (POC) revenue recognition method and job costing
  • Previous experience with AIA documents, Dynamics 365 - Business Central
  • Proficiency in managing Accounts Receivable (AR)
  • Capability to handle Bank Reconciliations
  • Experience with General Ledger maintenance
  • Skilled in creating Journal Entries
  • Experience with Commercial Construction Projects
  • Knowledge of Construction Projects - Accounting
  • Familiarity with AIA Billing
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in using accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification is preferred
