About the position

The Project Coordinator for the Public Realm at the Division of Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on New York City's streets. This position is integral to supporting the broader goals of economic and social vitality for the city's residents and businesses. The TPM is responsible for various aspects of transportation planning, including street design, technical analysis, transit development, and ensuring the safety of all road users, including motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists. The Office of Livable Streets (OLS) focuses on strategic planning, community engagement, and the implementation of policies that enhance the livability of streets across the city. The Project Coordinator will work closely with the OLS to create streets that prioritize safety, accessibility, and community cohesion while also promoting economic vitality. In this role, the Project Coordinator will assist in developing the Pedestrian and Public Space Unit's project portfolio, which includes both in-house and capital projects. The selected candidate will collaborate with various internal DOT units and external city agencies, such as the Department of Parks and Recreation, to assess capital needs and evaluate existing project lists. A significant part of the role involves analyzing various data sets to identify potential projects within specific neighborhood boundaries, taking into account factors such as existing walking modal share, density, land use, and sociodemographic variables. The Project Coordinator will also conduct community outreach to understand the needs and goals of the community better, educating them on DOT's tools and objectives. The ideal candidate will have expertise in data analysis using software such as ArcGIS or QGIS, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Additionally, strong photography and graphic skills are essential for effectively conveying information using tools like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Microsoft PowerPoint. Familiarity with the latest traffic calming techniques and streetscape design considerations is also important for this role. Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate expertise in data analysis using ArcGIS or QGIS software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Utilize photography and graphic skills to convey information effectively using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Understand and apply the latest traffic calming techniques and streetscape design considerations.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community-centered activities related to the duties described; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community-centered activities related to the duties described; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to the above, with at least one year of experience as described in the first requirement.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional experience in urban planning, design, or construction.
  • Previous experience with mapping software (ArcGIS), Computer-Aided Design (AutoCAD), Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Excel.
