About the position

The California Youth Empowerment Network's (CAYEN) is a youth-led program of Mental Health America of California (MHAC), dedicated to empowering Transition Aged Youth (TAY) aged 18 to 25 to influence behavioral health policies positively. The Project Coordinator will play a crucial role in leading the development and operations of the Statewide TAY Advocacy Project. This position involves delivering advocacy training and presentations, actively researching advocacy opportunities, and leading TAY Action Team meetings, conference calls, and webinars. The Project Coordinator will also be responsible for developing advocacy tools and talking points for TAY, creating annual policy priorities, and operationalizing strategic goals in collaboration with CAYEN leadership and the board. In addition to these responsibilities, the Project Coordinator will represent CAYEN in the community, building relationships with stakeholders such as government agencies, advocacy groups, and community-based organizations. This role requires a commitment to CAYEN's mission and an understanding of youth leadership development and empowerment. The Project Coordinator will report directly to the Program Manager and will work in a hybrid environment, balancing remote work with in-person responsibilities in Sacramento, CA.

Responsibilities

  • Report to Project Manager and collaborate in leading the development and operations of Statewide TAY Advocacy Project
  • Deliver advocacy trainings and presentations
  • Actively research and identify advocacy opportunities for Statewide TAY Action Teams
  • Lead TAY Action Team meetings, conference calls, and webinars
  • Develop advocacy tools and talking points for TAY
  • Create annual policy priorities and operationalize strategic goals in partnership with CAYEN leadership and board
  • Represent CAYEN in the community through networking and collaboration
  • Build relationships with community stakeholders like government agencies, advocacy groups, and community-based organizations

Requirements

  • To be within the age of Transition Age Youth (TAY)
  • Lived experience with behavioral health, juvenile justice, housing security, and/or foster care
  • Minimum of two years experience with community programs (two years working with TAY)
  • Commitment to CAYEN's mission
  • Understanding of and commitment to youth leadership development and empowerment
  • Ability to lead and manage with integrity
  • Excellent interpersonal communications skills; knowledge of MS Suite and social media
  • Experience in community outreach, group facilitation and collaborative partnerships
  • Demonstrated history of effectively engaging youth in community discussions, forums, or workshops
  • Community organizing experience and/or knowledge of public policy and legislative process
  • Commitment to travel across California and work evenings and occasional weekends as needed
