About the position

Rowell Chemical Corporation, a leading bulk chemical manufacturer and distributor located in the Chicago area, is seeking a dedicated Assistant Project Manager to join their expanding facility in Willow Springs, IL. This full-time position is integral to the plant team, focusing on the expansion and optimization of the site. The successful candidate will play a key role in capital project execution, providing essential process engineering support to both the facility and the Senior Project Manager. Additionally, the role involves oversight and technical support for the contractor-led plant maintenance group and reliability programs, ensuring that all operations align with the highest standards of environmental, safety, health, and security (ESHS). The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in chemical or petrochemical plant operations, particularly in process engineering, maintenance, and capital project management. This position is designed for individuals who view their role as service-oriented, engaging with customers at all levels within and outside the organization. Candidates should be prepared to leverage their diverse career backgrounds, provided they have relevant experience in process plants. In this role, you will be responsible for managing capital projects from inception through execution, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and fostering a culture of safety and efficiency within the plant. The Assistant Project Manager will also be involved in the creation and revision of operational and maintenance procedures, as well as participating in audits and incident investigations to promote continuous improvement in safety and operational performance.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the execution of capital projects at the facility.
  • Provide process engineering support to the Senior Project Manager and plant operations.
  • Oversee contractor-led maintenance groups and reliability programs.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and security standards.
  • Engage with internal and external customers to facilitate project success.
  • Participate in the creation and revision of operational and maintenance procedures.
  • Conduct audits and incident investigations to enhance safety protocols.
  • Manage project timelines and budgets effectively.

Requirements

  • 4-year engineering degree (Chemical Engineering preferred) or relevant college degree with chemical or petrochemical plant experience.
  • Experience in capital project creation, design, and construction management.
  • Familiarity with chemical plant equipment, instrumentation, and electrical systems.
  • Experience with hazard recognition and analysis in a chemical manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of major regulatory requirements (EPA, DOT, OSHA, FDA, NFPA, PSM, etc.).
  • Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office products, particularly Word and Excel.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • 2+ years of plant operations experience.
  • Background with a PSM covered facility.
  • Experience with chlor-alkali, flammable/combustible, or petroleum products.
  • Knowledge of marine operations and logistics (rail & highway).
  • Experience with API storage tanks and industrial coatings.
  • Troubleshooting skills for electrical and control circuits, pumps, and hydraulics.
