About the position

The City of Norfolk's Department of Libraries is seeking a dedicated Project Coordinator to manage the Randi Marston Peterson Maker Studio located within the Mary D. Pretlow Anchor Branch of the Norfolk Public Library system. This role is pivotal in overseeing the daily operations of the Maker Studio, which serves as a hub for community engagement and innovation. The Project Coordinator will be responsible for nurturing strong partnerships within the community, ensuring effective staffing, managing resource utilization, and overseeing financial planning for the studio. In this position, the Project Coordinator will develop and implement program goals and objectives tailored to the Maker Studio's mission. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and adaptability to facilitate the efficient use of the makerspace. The Coordinator will also be tasked with envisioning and proposing innovative methods to enhance the studio's offerings, thereby fostering a culture of design thinking. Additionally, the Project Coordinator will assist in budget development, seek grant funding opportunities, and monitor expenditures to ensure the financial health of the Maker Studio. Coordination of programming efforts will involve collaboration with all library branches and other departments to plan and execute engaging programs. The Coordinator will also play a key role in the acquisition of equipment and materials necessary for various programming projects. The position includes managerial responsibilities such as participating in the staff interview process and making hiring recommendations for Maker Space personnel. The Project Coordinator will be instrumental in planning for future technological advancements and the growth of the innovation culture within the library. This role will provide library patrons with opportunities to ideate, create, and test their entrepreneurial concepts, while also instituting programs focused on safety, training, access, and workflow. Regular assessments of equipment, programs, and processes will be conducted to advise leadership on emerging technologies and trends in innovation and makerspaces. The Coordinator will also troubleshoot equipment issues and work with library administration and city departments to resolve repairs efficiently. Finally, the Project Coordinator will be responsible for planning inclusive Maker Studio classes and events, particularly targeting traditionally underrepresented communities in makerspace environments. Regular updates will be provided to administrators and community stakeholders regarding the Maker Studio's activities and developments.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day Maker Studio operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a general professional or technical field.
  • Three years of experience in a field related to the program/project, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to write performance plans, work plans, and reports.
  • Experience in supervising staff and managing day-to-day operations of the Maker Studio.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience in compiling data and developing policies and procedures.
