About the position

As a Project Engineer in Automation at Lonza, you will play a crucial role in the development, support, configuration, and modification of automation systems. This position requires expertise in various platforms including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, drives and servo systems, Open Platform Communication (OPC) software, process historians, and Distributed Control Systems (DCS). You will utilize Lonza's global standard software development life cycle methodology to ensure the highest quality in automation solutions. Your responsibilities will include creating test plans to verify software fitness for use, carrying out commissioning, and supporting the validation of automation systems. Additionally, you will be tasked with developing accurate time estimates for control software development tasks and participating in team-based continuous improvement initiatives. The role demands excellent communication skills as you will be expected to participate in or lead global collaborative projects. You will apply advanced software engineering competencies, including Functional Specification/Design Specification (FS/DS), PLC or SCADA or Motion control development, and software life cycle methodology. You will design automation systems or modifications to existing systems based on process diagrams, user requirements, functional requirements, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID), and machine mechanical drawings. Collaboration with the global automation engineering team is essential for the success of development projects, standards development, and the selection and implementation of new technologies and automation systems. In addition to your technical responsibilities, you will maintain software and hardware global configuration information, technical documentation, software backups, control software revision notes, and knowledge base data records. You will also generate FS/DS documentation and support the cGMP validation process. Regular communication with the Automation Engineering Manager regarding project progress and potential issues is expected. Furthermore, you will provide after-hours support for plant operations based on a rotating schedule, collaborating effectively with plant personnel and providing technical guidance to electronics.

Responsibilities

  • Designs automation systems or modifications to existing automation systems based on process diagrams, user requirements, functional requirements, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID), and machine mechanical drawings.
  • Collaborates effectively with the global automation engineering team on development projects, standards development, selection, and implementation of new technologies and automation systems.
  • Supports, configures, and replicates PLC systems, SCADA, drive configuration, servo systems, and vision systems, including new releases and patching.
  • Maintains software and hardware global configuration information, technical documentation, software backups, control software revision notes, and knowledge base data records.
  • Generates FS/DS documentation and supports the cGMP validation process.
  • Regularly communicates with the Automation Engineering Manager on project progress and potential issues.
  • Provides after-hours support for plant operations based on a rotating schedule and collaborates effectively with plant personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Chemistry, or a related field with an emphasis on automation required.
  • Master of Science degree preferred.
  • Experience in Automation Engineering is required.
