About the position

Hoyle Tanner has an immediate opening for a Project Engineer in our Northeast Municipal Engineering Services Group (NEME). This position can be based out of any of our offices in NH or VT. Be part of a team of civil engineering design professionals who are committed to building strong and lasting relationships with our clients by delivering creative, cost-effective, quality solutions while enhancing the communities in which we work and live. As a Project Engineer in our NEME Group, you will be a strong contributor on a team tasked with delivering infrastructure and civil engineering projects which includes site design, grading, stormwater management and treatment design, and sanitary sewer system design. You will be responsible for the preparation of calculations, layouts, modeling, estimates, drawings, and specifications under the direction of senior engineers and project managers. Additionally, you will lead and guide junior engineers and CADD teammates, working as part of an integrated, multi-discipline team to solve technical challenges. Your role will also involve using software and other tools to develop designs and organize work, gathering, researching, and maintaining engineering data records including tests, drawings, and field data. You may attend site visits and meetings with clients and contractors, and may be responsible for construction observation and limited administration. Reading and understanding technical drawings and specifications will be essential, as well as demonstrating strong writing and communication skills. Continuous learning is encouraged, including the pursuit of an advanced engineering degree. The successful candidate will have experience with plan production, specification writing, engineering analysis, and task management in a project engineer role, and possess strong oral and written communication skills. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil3D, HydroCAD, and other related civil design software is desired. This position is based out of our New Hampshire and Vermont offices (Portsmouth, NH, Manchester, NH, Burlington, VT) and is a hybrid remote position opportunity. Responsibilities

  • Be a strong contributor on a team tasked with delivering infrastructure and civil engineering projects including site design, grading, stormwater management and treatment design, and sanitary sewer system design.
  • Prepare calculations, layouts, modeling, estimates, drawings, and specifications under the direction of senior engineers and project managers.
  • Lead and guide junior engineers and CADD teammates.

  • Attend site visits and meetings with clients and contractors as needed.

  • Increase knowledge through continuous learning within and outside the organization including pursuit of an advanced engineering degree.
  • Complete assignments accurately and on time with limited direction from the Senior Project Engineer or Project Manager.
  • Develop an understanding of project budget, scope of services, project development, project schedule; provide updates and recommendations to the Project Manager in maintaining schedule and budget.
  • Understand the client's organization, key people, and client expectations.
  • Share best practices to improve performance and efficiency of self/team.
  • Develop person-hour estimates/budgets with guidance from senior staff.
  • Lead small team for moderately complex projects.
  • Assist in proposal efforts and development.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring and feedback to develop entry-level and staff engineers, peers and others as needed.
  • Conduct site visits and participate in or lead meetings with clients/contractors.
  • Demonstrate strong technical writing and presentation skills for deliverables, proposals, and presentations in a public setting (for clients or at seminars/conferences).

Requirements

  • BS or MS degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 4-9 years of experience in civil engineering or related field.
  • PE Licensure in one or more of the following: NH, VT with ability to obtain reciprocal licenses in other New England states.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil3D, HydroCAD, and other related civil design software.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with plan production, specification writing, and engineering analysis.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in project management and task management in a project engineer role.
