About the position

The Project Engineer - Cooling Tower/Water System at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is responsible for overseeing and improving water treatment systems, including cooling towers and HVAC/plumbing systems. This role requires a strong mechanical background and involves conducting inspections, evaluations, and providing recommendations for water-related systems. The engineer will work closely with the Maintenance and Site Services group, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations while also mentoring early career engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Advise as Subject Matter Expert (SME) on HVAC and plumbing systems.
  • Establish design criteria for HVAC and plumbing systems.
  • Design, evaluate, and upgrade facility HVAC and plumbing systems.
  • Manage and interpret water analysis to provide treatment recommendations.
  • Apply and enforce sustainable design measures such as ASHRAE 90.1 and LEED.
  • Prepare and interpret life cycle cost analyses.
  • Provide technical reviews of designs from LANL and outside firms.
  • Assist in writing Requirements and Criteria Documents for projects.
  • Perform code searches and apply relevant codes and standards.
  • Prepare technical reports and studies related to water systems.
  • Develop design details, calculations, specifications, and documentation.
  • Support the MSS department in developing maintenance-related documents.
  • Perform safety analyses and hazard evaluations for existing systems.
  • Coordinate with various departments to achieve project goals.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university.
  • For Engineer 2: Minimum 3 years of experience with mechanical and plumbing systems; experience in HVAC design; knowledge of ASME B31 codes.
  • For Engineer 3: Minimum 6 years of experience in HVAC design, including nuclear-related HVAC design; expertise in thermal and fluid systems.
  • Experience with engineering work planning, design coordination, and project management.
  • Ability to conduct independent work requiring judgment in engineering techniques and problem-solving.
  • Familiarity with International Building Code and DOE standards for non-reactor facilities.
  • Proficiency in mechanical software and Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice-to-haves

  • Mechanical professional engineering license (NCEES certified).
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Familiarity with LANL Conduct of Engineering (COE) and Quality policies.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Access and Visio or Primavera P6 software.
