About the position

Hunter Contracting Co. is seeking a dedicated Project Engineer for our Tucson area operations, specializing in heavy civil and land development projects. The Project Engineer will play a crucial role in supporting project staff, ensuring that projects progress on schedule and within budget. This position requires a proactive and detail-oriented individual who can manage multiple responsibilities and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment. The Project Engineer will be responsible for maintaining and updating project schedules, reviewing job costs, and ensuring accurate time card submissions. This role involves developing manual tracking systems for materials, preparing project setup notebooks, and attending various project meetings to ensure effective communication among team members. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in construction technology, excellent communication skills, and the ability to visualize three-dimensional plans from two-dimensional drawings. In addition to technical skills, the Project Engineer must demonstrate good people skills, a strategic vision, and a meticulous approach to work. The position may require long hours, weekend work, and travel to project sites, emphasizing the need for flexibility and a willingness to take on significant responsibilities. Candidates with experience in water/wastewater projects will be given preference, but all qualified individuals are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains project schedules current with input from Project Superintendent and Project Manager.
  • Updates project schedules' weekly scheduling board and distributes minutes from scheduling meetings.
  • Reviews job costs weekly quantities for input and evaluates job costs.
  • Researches suspicious job cost items and ensures appropriate corrections are made.
  • Reviews time cards for accuracy and completeness, including equipment utilization.
  • Reviews field receipts for proper and complete coding.
  • Develops manual tracking system for monitoring material quantities and updates it weekly.
  • Researches suspicious manual tracking entries and yields, making necessary corrections.
  • Develops Daily Cost/Production Reports on key items as selected by the Project Manager and/or Division Manager.
  • Prepares correspondence as necessary and reviews all project plans, specifications, and estimates.
  • Becomes familiar with project requirements and scope, developing a list of special requirements.
  • Develops a list of required submittals and obtains necessary submittal documents.
  • Reviews submittal documents for conformance with project requirements and prepares documents for submittals.
  • Maintains a log for tracking submittals and develops a list of required permits.
  • Prepares permit applications and obtains permits.
  • Prepares project setup notebook and distributes it to the project team.
  • Attends project pre-planning meetings and develops detailed project construction schedules in cooperation with the Project Manager and Project Superintendent.
  • Develops project cash flow reports from the project schedule and attends agency pre-construction conferences, preparing and distributing minutes of meetings to the project team.
  • Attends agency weekly project meetings and processes change orders.
  • Prepares and processes force accounts and back charges, performing special assignments as required by the Project Manager and/or Division Manager.
  • Assists with project closeout, including quantity take-offs, as-builts, and inputting job cost histories.
  • Prepares project progress estimates and attends monthly supervisory meetings and weekly project scheduling meetings.
  • Visits projects regularly and prepares for and attends all required meetings.
  • Estimates as assigned, including take-offs, research, and vendor contracts.
  • Adheres to all safety policies, procedures, and instructions from management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree preferred; and/or a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • General computer knowledge and experience with Excel, Word, and Suretrak (Primavera).
  • Possesses a valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to work within precise standards of accuracy and visualize three-dimensional plans from two-dimensional drawings.
  • Demonstrates good people skills and oral and written communication skills.
  • Sound technical background in construction technology with strategic vision and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects, adjust quickly to shifting priorities, meet deadlines, and handle pressure situations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in water/wastewater projects is a plus.
