About the position

The Project Engineer - Transportation Design role at Clark Dietz, Inc. involves providing planning and design services within the Transportation practice. The position requires executing project design tasks with limited oversight, focusing on roadway engineering and adhering to IDOT standards. The role offers hybrid home/office flexibility and is based in Chicago, IL.

Responsibilities

  • Performs design tasks for a variety of transportation improvement projects under the direction of a Sr. Engineer or Project Manager.
  • Applies local, state, and federal design guidelines and standards to complete transportation, traffic, and drainage related designs.
  • Utilizes design guidelines from IDOT, ITE, NACTO, AASHTO and MUTCD to develop multimodal solutions and alternatives.
  • Develops specifications and quantity estimates for transportation or site-civil related projects.
  • Develops horizontal/vertical and cross-sectional geometry for roadway and/or drainage projects.
  • Understands and applies the Highway Capacity Manual to complete traffic related designs.
  • Creates plans and bid documents for project deliverables using a variety of design and modeling tools including: MicroStation, Open Roads Designer, Geopak, ArcGIS, HCS, Synchro and Excel.
  • Coordinates with public/private utilities to document physical location and analyze potential conflicts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • B.S Degree in Civil Engineering is required and IL PE license is desired.
  • 8+ years of experience as a transportation design engineer with a focus on roadway engineering is required.
  • Experience with roadway projects for IDOT and municipal/county clients is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the IDOT design manuals, submittals, permitting, and environmental requirements is required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interface with clients and participate in public meetings.
  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work as part of a team across multiple offices.
  • Proficiency with Bentley MicroStation is required.
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to travel to client and project sites is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Development of bid documents and special provisions is desired.
  • Rural and urban drainage design experience is desired.
  • Proficiency with Geopak and Open Roads Designer (ORD) is desired.
