About the position

General Atomics is seeking a Project Engineer for Weapons Systems to join our Mission Payloads & Exploitation (MPEx) group in Poway, California. This role is pivotal in supporting weapon system integrations on Unmanned Aircraft (UA) programs. As a Project Engineer, you will be responsible for leading or supporting efforts in the integration, verification, and validation of weapon systems, ensuring that all systems meet the required specifications and performance standards. You will develop program plans, estimates, and schedules, and engage in system architecture design and analysis to generate comprehensive requirements for the projects you oversee. In this dynamic environment, you will troubleshoot conflicting design and development requirements, ensuring that all aspects of the project align with customer expectations and technical feasibility. Your role will also involve developing and presenting technical materials for reviews and meetings, supporting lab, ground, and flight test events, and maintaining critical documentation such as Interface Control Documents and Software Requirement Specifications. You will coordinate and interface with customers, contractors, and various engineering groups, providing essential support for the ongoing operation of the weapons systems. This position requires a strong focus on customer satisfaction, as you will be expected to formulate and implement plans to resolve technical engineering problems effectively. You will also provide direction to design or technical staff, contributing to the overall success of the projects and the organization. The ideal candidate will possess a blend of technical expertise, project management experience, and strong interpersonal skills to thrive in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Lead or support efforts performing integration, verification and/or validation of weapon systems on GA-ASI's UA programs
  • Develop program plans, estimates, and schedules
  • Develop system/architecture designs, perform system level analysis, and generate requirements
  • Troubleshoot conflicting design/development requirements
  • Develop and present technical material for reviews and meetings
  • Support lab, ground, and flight test events
  • Develop/maintain Interface Control Documents, Software Requirement Specifications, Performance Specifications, presentations and review test plans/procedures
  • Coordinate and interface with customers, contractors, and engineering groups assigned to projects
  • Support ongoing operation of the weapons systems
  • Provide support for proposals/white papers for future efforts or capabilities
  • Provide direction to design or technical staff

Requirements

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree, master's degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution
  • Four or more years of experience with a bachelor's degree or two or more years of experience with a master's degree
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to effectively interface with other departments or professionals and represent the organization as a prime technical contact
  • Customer focused with the ability to formulate and implement plans to resolve technical engineering problems
  • Ability to travel to support program and test events (up to 25%)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance

Nice-to-haves

  • Software programming or embedded systems experience (familiarity with C++, MATLAB, Python, PERL scripting, etc.)
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-1553 and logical Interface Control Documents
  • Experience integrating weapons, payloads, or avionics onto aircraft
  • Experience with weapon or tactical datalinks
  • Previous project management experience
