About the position

The Project Engineer position at Fay Southeast involves assisting the Superintendent and Project Manager in managing various aspects of construction projects, primarily in the field. This entry-level role requires flexibility to travel throughout the Hampton Roads area, depending on project locations. The position emphasizes safety, quality, and effective communication while supporting project planning, execution, and administration.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with pre-construction activities including construction planning and design.
  • Interpret specifications, designs, and drawings; prepare quantity takeoffs.
  • Communicate and reinforce company safety policies and procedures.
  • Prepare drawings and sketches to support construction work, change orders, and estimates.
  • Verify work-in-place quantities for invoicing and payment.
  • Maintain submittal logs and ensure timely receipt and review of submittals and shop drawings.
  • Ensure accurate completion of craft timecards and verify cost codes for purchases and contracts.
  • Maintain as-built drawings and post RFIs, bulletins, and ASIs as appropriate.
  • Maintain RFI logs and participate in constructability reviews and value engineering functions.
  • Develop and administer project engineering procedures and documentation tracking.
  • Take weekly jobsite photographs and work with the Safety Department to maintain project safety records.
  • Assist in quality control activities and prepare project status reports.
  • Participate in project status meetings and assist in developing meeting minutes.
  • Assist in project close-out activities and support estimates as needed.

Requirements

  • 4-year civil engineering degree or equivalent technical training and related experience.
  • 2-4 years of field construction experience.
  • E.I.T. preferred but not required.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Basic understanding of cost analysis.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to travel as required.
