About the position

The Project Engineer at ABEC is a pivotal role that involves designing, specifying, and commissioning new and renovated biopharmaceutical process and clean utility equipment. This position requires a strong engineering background and the ability to provide comprehensive engineering support while leading deviation investigations for equipment and manufacturing processes. The Project Engineer will work closely with the Project Manager to ensure that project operating income, execution plans, and customer satisfaction goals are met or exceeded. Daily responsibilities include job costing, estimating, billings, labor management, enhancing customer relationships, scheduling, and purchasing responsibilities. In this role, the Project Engineer must maintain effective communication with assigned Project Managers, Project Team Members, and Departmental Management Supervisors, providing regular updates on project workload progress and needs. Monitoring project costs and identifying any changes in scope that may affect project costs is crucial. The Project Engineer will also serve as the direct customer contact for technical items related to assigned projects, ensuring that customer specifications and requirements are thoroughly reviewed and understood. The position requires the preparation and maintenance of contract files in accordance with company procedures, as well as supporting company designers on engineering-related deliverables. The Project Engineer will be involved in the creation and approval of key engineering and design documentation, performing necessary calculations for equipment verification and component/system sizing. Additionally, the role includes supporting automation and electrical engineering resources, participating in design-driven model reviews, and conducting Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) activities both domestically and internationally. Continuous improvement initiatives and travel to customer job sites are also integral parts of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Design, specify, and commission new and renovated biopharmaceutical process and clean utility equipment.
  • Provide engineering support and lead deviation investigations for equipment and manufacturing processes.
  • Assist the Project Manager in achieving project operating income and customer satisfaction goals.
  • Monitor all project costs and identify any scope of supply changes affecting project cost.
  • Function as the direct customer contact on technical items related to assigned projects.
  • Prepare and update the 'Project Scope Report'.
  • Support Project Manager activities as needed when the Project Manager is unavailable.
  • Review, generate, and comprehend customer-based specifications and proposal documents.
  • Prepare and maintain contract files in accordance with company procedures.
  • Support company designers on engineering-related deliverables while meeting customer expectations.
  • Support the creation and approval of key engineering/design documentation such as P&IDs, GA's, and BOM's.
  • Perform calculations required for equipment verification and component/system sizing.
  • Prepare specifications and equipment data sheets.
  • Support design verification activities and participate in design-driven model reviews.
  • Review and approve related Engineering Change Notices (ECNs).
  • Support automation and electrical engineering resources on related deliverables.
  • Work with company automation resources to review customer requirements and generate related automation documentation.
  • Support manufacturing and quality resources in fabricating, assembling, and qualifying engineering/design deliverables.
  • Function as the company contact on technical items related to assigned projects under fabrication and quality verification.
  • Supervise and/or conduct FAT and/or SAT activities both domestically and internationally.
  • Generate required test plans and seek customer approval in advance.
  • Support the development of engineering standards and procedures for departmental review.
  • Participate in company-sponsored process improvement teams as assigned.
  • Travel to customer job sites as required.
  • Identify and drive Continuous Improvement (CI) opportunities.

Requirements

  • BS in an Engineering field (Mechanical, Biological, Chemical or equivalent experience).
  • 3 years post-graduate Engineering experience in related industry preferred.
  • Preferred experience of 5 years post-graduate Engineering experience working in a BioPharm or Piping systems market.
  • 2 years' experience in support of automation and control systems engineering related to bioprocesses preferred.
  • Awareness of and prior experience with implementing Continuous Improvement (CI) a plus.
  • Prior Lean/Six Sigma experience a plus.
