About the position

The Project Manager I position is a temporary role focused on managing park and playground renovation projects for Boston Parks. This position is grant-funded and is expected to last approximately three to five years, depending on the project's duration. The role involves overseeing the planning, management, and review of design and development projects within the Design & Construction Division, ensuring that projects meet departmental standards and community needs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop capital projects and monitor the design and construction of open space, park, and playground projects by outside contractors.
  • Produce finished drawings for design and detailing of park and playground improvements, including site improvements, paving, drainage, site structures, play equipment, and landscaping.
  • Assist in planning development programs, forming departmental design standards, and evaluating development and maintenance programs.
  • Provide site support for parks and playgrounds, including writing grants and proposals, overseeing maintenance contracts, repairs, improvements, and conducting play lot audits.
  • Organize and participate in inter-agency, interest groups, and community/public meetings to obtain and promote approvals and consensus for development programs.

Requirements

  • At least four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paid professional experience in open space parks and playground development involving site analysis, design, drafting, construction documents, cost estimating, and construction supervision.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in a supervisory or administrative capacity.
  • A bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred and may substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • Strong writing skills are preferred.
  • Must have and maintain a current MA driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Landscape architect preferred.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
