About the position

The Materials Specialist will work within the prime materials team based out of Tinley Park, focusing on the specifications and qualifications of metal and coatings packaging materials. This role involves managing purchasing support projects for aluminum and steel, supporting operations and sourcing teams. The position requires strong materials knowledge, excellent communication, and interpersonal skills. The role will also involve some travel and close collaboration with Crown Operations, Corporate Sourcing, Project Managers, and Materials Suppliers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical responsibilities for aluminum and steel specifications and qualifications in North & South America and Europe.
  • Ensure adherence to the Crown Materials Qualification Process, ensuring supplier conformance and compliance with new materials in collaboration with the Regulatory team.
  • Cooperate closely with Crown's Purchasing Group, business sectors, and Corporate Technology teams to manage new materials approval, standardization, and quality performance.
  • Provide trial support with Plants, Suppliers, and Sourcing, ensuring compliance with the Crown Materials Database.
  • Support ongoing improvement in plant performance through hands-on technical support and knowledge management.
  • Provide excellent service support for failure investigations of materials as technical support to Crown's businesses, with metallography lab experience being advantageous.
  • Attend material production and component manufacturing trials as required.
  • Support supplier audits as requested by the businesses and Sourcing.
  • Collaborate with the Packaging Science team in Wantage to support qualifications and resolve failure investigations.
  • Support the EHS program and continuous improvement in team performance.
  • Support joint developments with suppliers to enhance materials, processes, or novel surfaces for performance or efficiency advantages.
  • Work closely with Aluminium & Steel Supplier Collaboration Leaders to maintain a technology pipeline for prime materials and process development.
  • Represent Corporate Technology at corporate meetings, including project reviews.

Requirements

  • University Degree in Metallurgy or Materials Science
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • Proactive and results-focused attitude
  • Fluency in English

  • Demonstrable experience in managing materials-related projects
  • Six Sigma or related training and practical experience
