About the position

The Barrymore Film Center (BFC) is seeking a part-time Projectionist responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of projection and sound equipment for film screenings and events. This role is crucial in ensuring a high-quality viewing experience for audiences while adhering to safety and compliance standards. The Projectionist will play a key role in preserving film history and fostering the future of filmmaking through their technical expertise and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate projection and sound equipment for film screenings, ensuring optimal audio and visual quality.
  • Perform pre-show checks on all equipment to ensure functionality and address any issues before screenings begin.
  • Handle and store film reels and digital media with care to prevent damage.
  • Maintain an organized inventory of films and media, ensuring they are stored properly and are easily accessible.
  • Conduct regular maintenance and cleaning of projection equipment to ensure it operates efficiently.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues related to projection and sound equipment during screenings, minimizing disruptions.
  • Work closely with the programming team to understand film schedules and requirements for each screening.
  • Communicate effectively with staff to provide assistance and ensure a positive experience for audience members.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and industry regulations regarding the handling and operation of projection equipment.
  • Stay informed about best practices and advancements in projection technology to enhance the film-viewing experience.

Requirements

  • Proficient knowledge of projection and sound equipment, including digital projectors and audio systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills to quickly identify and resolve technical issues.
  • Attention to detail to ensure high-quality projections and sound during screenings.
  • Previous experience as a projectionist or in a related technical role, preferably in a film or performing arts setting.
  • Ability to work with film formats, both digital and traditional (4k digital, 35mm, 70mm etc.) a plus.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required for screenings and events.
