About the position

As a Property Adjuster I at Erie Insurance, you will exercise independent discretion and judgment in handling property claims within your designated level of authority. This role is crucial in servicing an assigned territory, which may include handling litigated claims. The position is remote, allowing you to work from home within the required territory in Pennsylvania, ideally residing in Tioga, Bradford, or Sullivan County, with consideration for candidates in Lycoming and Columbia County. A company car and necessary equipment will be provided to facilitate your work from home. In this role, you will be responsible for contacting policyholders regarding property claims, conducting thorough investigations, interviewing insureds and witnesses, inspecting damages, and preparing estimates. You will evaluate claims to make recommendations regarding coverage, set and maintain adequate reserves, and document claim files for closure. Additionally, you will identify subrogation situations and take appropriate actions, ensuring that all claims are brought to conclusion efficiently. You will interact with agents and district sales managers on matters of mutual concern and may handle property claims involving damages or coverage, including negotiating with plaintiff attorneys or coordinating litigation with defense counsel as required. Continuous learning is emphasized, as you will attend industry-related training programs and complete the Technical Learning Center Training within your first year of hire. Participation on the Catastrophe Team may also be required, which involves travel on short notice to other locations for extended periods. This position requires good time management and organizational skills, as well as the ability to drive and travel regularly within your assigned territory. The hiring manager may also consider candidates for the Property Adjuster II position based on the depth and breadth of experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Contact policyholders regarding property claims within level of authority.
  • Conduct investigations, interviews insureds and witnesses, inspect damage, and prepare estimates.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations regarding coverage of claims.
  • Handle property claims within designated authority, setting and maintaining adequate reserves.
  • Obtain and review reports, statements, records, and related materials as required.
  • Evaluate information to determine coverage and total value of claims.
  • Determine payments and issue checks or decline payment as required.
  • Document claim files and submit final report to file for closure.
  • Identify subrogation situations and initiate appropriate action.
  • Service assigned territory and bring assigned claims to conclusion.
  • Interact with agents and district sales managers on matters of mutual concern.
  • Handle property claims involving damages or coverage, including litigated claims.
  • Develop and apply a working knowledge of estimating practices and procedures relating to the adjustment of property claims.
  • Attend industry-related training programs and other training sessions to stay current on policy changes, interpretation, or new legislation.
  • Successfully complete Technical Learning Center Training within one year of hire date.
  • Participate on Catastrophe Team when required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED and two years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required; or
  • High School Diploma or GED and successful completion of ERIE sponsored formal education; or
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Incumbent must live in territory assigned unless a change is approved by the company.
  • Willingness to pursue and complete Technical Learning Center Training required.
  • Successful completion of AIC 33 and AIC 35 preferred.
  • Willingness to obtain and maintain any required licenses.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record required.
