About the position

The Claims Adjuster position at Erie Insurance is a remote role that requires independent discretion and judgment in handling property claims within a designated level of authority. The selected candidate will be responsible for servicing an assigned territory, which may include handling litigated claims. This position is ideal for individuals residing in Stafford, Prince William, Southern Fairfax County, or surrounding areas. The hiring manager may also consider candidates for the Property Adjuster I level, depending on the depth and breadth of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications. A company car and necessary equipment to work from home will be provided, and good time management and organizational skills are preferred. The role involves regular driving and travel within the assigned territory. In this position, the Claims Adjuster will contact policyholders regarding property claims, conduct investigations, interview insureds and witnesses, inspect damages, and prepare estimates. They will evaluate and make recommendations regarding coverage of claims, handle property claims within their designated authority, set and maintain adequate reserves, and document claim files. The adjuster will also identify subrogation situations and initiate appropriate actions, interact with agents and district sales managers, and may handle litigated claims, including negotiations with plaintiff attorneys or coordinating litigation with defense counsel as required. The role requires the adjuster to develop a working knowledge of estimating practices and procedures related to property claims adjustment and to attend industry-related training programs to stay current on policy changes and new legislation. Additionally, the adjuster will participate on the Catastrophe Team when required.

Responsibilities

  • Contact policyholders regarding property claims within level of authority.
  • Conduct investigations, interviews insureds and witnesses, inspect damage, and prepare estimates.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations regarding coverage of claims.
  • Handle property claims within designated authority and set and maintain adequate reserves.
  • Obtain and review reports, statements, records, and related materials as required.
  • Evaluate information to determine coverage and total value of claim.
  • Determine payments and issue checks or decline payment as required.
  • Document claim files and submit final report to file for closure.
  • Identify subrogation situations and initiate appropriate action.
  • Service assigned territory and bring assigned claims to conclusion.
  • Interact with agents and district sales managers on matters of mutual concern.
  • Handle property claims involving damages or coverage, including litigated claims.
  • Develop and apply a working knowledge of estimating practices and procedures relating to the adjustment of property claims.
  • Attend industry-related training programs and other training sessions to stay current on policy changes, interpretation, or new legislation.
  • Successfully complete Technical Learning Center Training within one year of hire date.
  • Participate on Catastrophe Team when required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED and two years of claims handling experience, or equivalent required; or High School Diploma or GED and successful completion of ERIE sponsored formal education; or Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Willingness to pursue and complete Technical Learning Center Training required.
  • Successful completion of AIC 33 and AIC 35 preferred.
  • Incumbent must live in territory assigned unless a change is approved by the company.
  • Position requires incumbent to serve on catastrophe duty, which may include travel on short notice to other locations for periods in excess of two consecutive weeks.
  • Willingness to obtain and maintain any required licenses.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record required.
