About the position

The Property and Evidence Technician - Auto Pound position at the City of Fort Worth Police Department is responsible for managing the receipt, storage, protection, delivery, release, and disposition of property and evidence. This role ensures the maintenance of the chain of custody for evidence and involves significant interaction with the public, requiring strong customer service skills. The technician will work in various conditions, including inclement weather, and will be required to work 2nd or 3rd shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, document, process and store evidence, property, and vehicles; assign control numbers and storage locations.
  • Release property and evidence to crime lab, courts, the public, or law enforcement agencies; ensure compliance with rules and chain of custody procedures.
  • Determine the final disposition of property and evidence, including vehicles; prepare paperwork for disposal and operate a forklift for removal.
  • Answer questions and provide information to the public regarding Police Department policies on storage and release of property and vehicles.
  • Inspect impounded vehicles for damage and identification numbers; document damage information.
  • Operate a computer to determine vehicle ownership and research databases for stolen vehicles.
  • Calculate impound fees for vehicle releases; receive payments and balance cash drawer daily.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One year of property and evidence maintenance or inventory control experience.
  • Experience in customer service and cash handling.
  • Valid driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Forklift experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).
  • Extensive public contact customer service skills.
  • Experience working with property inventory and inspection.
  • Experience in law enforcement; knowledge of Texas Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedures.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
