About the position

The Protestant Chaplain at San Quentin State Prison is responsible for providing spiritual and moral guidance to incarcerated individuals, conducting religious services, and offering pastoral care. This role involves supervising incarcerated workers, organizing religious programs, and providing counseling services. The chaplain will also manage office responsibilities, including record-keeping and report preparation, while ensuring that the spiritual needs of the prison population are met.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular daily and/or weekly worship services, special religious services on religious and national holidays, memorial services, and funeral services.
  • Provide pastoral visiting to hospitals, work programs, visiting areas, housing units, group activities, and families of incarcerated people.
  • Ensure that weekly religious services/visits are provided to all incarcerated people.
  • Provide individual, family, grief, marital, pre-release planning, and other pertinent counseling.
  • Organize, schedule, and conduct religious programs appropriate to the Protestant faith.
  • Approve the scheduling and conducting of religious programs by volunteer community clergy and volunteer religious representatives.
  • Provide religious education such as scripture studies, liturgy, history, comparative religion, religious values, contemporary issues, and sacred music.
  • Prepare and deliver sermons, administer the sacraments of the sick, Baptism, Communion, marriage, and Confirmation.
  • Manage office responsibilities, including preparing and submitting reports, handling correspondence, and maintaining records.

Requirements

  • Currently ordained and duly accredited by a nationally recognized Protestant denomination.
  • Good standing with the denomination, evidenced by a Letter of Certification of 'Good Standing.'

  • Experience in a correctional environment or with incarcerated populations.
  • Familiarity with diverse religious practices and beliefs.
