About the position

Under the general supervision of the Acting Director of The Center for Academic Counseling and Student Success, the P/T Adjunct Academic Counselor will engage students through effective enrollment and case management interventions as well as provide service to the college. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Engage students in choosing a career, degree program, and a successful outcome by supporting students with their educational and life skills planning (e.g. goal development) and providing individualized academic counseling to students. Engage students in establishing successful behaviors and monitor their progress by connecting students to different on and off campus resources, assisting with the coordination and implementation of retention strategies, and providing intervention for students. Provide service to the college by assisting with campus reports, attending meetings, and serving occasional evening/weekend hours, and participating in student orientation programs and workshops.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Master's Degree and Bachelor's Degree in Guidance Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, or closely related field, and one year of professional experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field as listed above, and three years of experience.
  • Master's Degree in a relevant field as listed above, plus a Bachelor's degree in a non-specific field (other than those listed), and two years of experience.
  • Experience with advising and a thorough understanding of exemplary approaches to support community college students.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while remaining organized.
  • Proactive nature and exceptional judgement.
  • Collegial and team-oriented temperament.
  • Proficiency in software systems including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptive to changing needs and priorities.
  • Strong student-centered orientation.
  • Ability to work with a team of diverse faculty, staff and students.
  • Evidence of responsiveness to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual verbal and written fluency strongly preferred.
  • Experience using platforms such as PeopleSoft, Degree Works, and Starfish is desirable.
  • Experience with student support services, youth development or similar social service programs.
  • Student advising experience.
  • Demonstrated intercultural competence.
  • Continuing commitment to advance equity, inclusion, and social justice practices in support of the needs of marginalized and minoritized student populations.
