About the position

The American Sign Language Interpreter will interpret for deaf and hard of hearing students in various settings including classes, advising, tutoring, and approved college activities. The role involves facilitating communication between Deaf and hard-of-hearing students, their peers, and faculty/staff while promoting cross-cultural communication through an understanding of Deaf culture. The interpreter is expected to maintain compliance with disability law and best practices in interpreting services.

Responsibilities

  • Interprets for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students in classes, workshops, meetings, and approved college activities on an as-needed basis.
  • Maintains policy and procedure as it applies to interpreting services to be consistent with disability law, RID Code of Professional Conduct, and best practices.
  • Facilitates communication between Deaf and hard-of-hearing students, their peers, and faculty/staff.
  • Prepares and plans using textbooks and other resources for the interpreting process.
  • Supports and participates in strategic initiatives and performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Hold national certification: National Interpreter Certification (NIC), National Association of the Deaf Certification (NAD III, IV, or V), or RID CI/CT or be within provisional certification timelines.
  • Eligible to obtain general license through Arizona Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ACDHH) within 30 days of employment by AWC OR have Provisional B or C License through ACDHH to be eligible for team interpreting.
  • Demonstrates commitment to the philosophy and mission of a comprehensive community college and sensitivity to the needs of students, faculty, or staff from multicultural backgrounds.

Nice-to-haves

  • Two years of experience interpreting at a post-secondary institution is preferred, but not required.
