About the position

Hope House Foundation is currently seeking a part-time Direct Support Professional (DSP) to join our dedicated team in Norfolk, VA. This role is essential in providing support to adults with developmental disabilities, helping them lead fulfilling lives within the community. The DSP will work closely with individuals to assist them in completing daily living activities, which include cooking, cleaning, laundry, hygiene, meal planning and preparation, grocery shopping, banking, and transportation. The position requires a commitment to fostering independence and community integration for the individuals served, ensuring they engage in leisure activities that they enjoy. The DSP will also be responsible for implementing behavioral support plans and providing guidance and behavioral support to the individuals. This includes reading, understanding, and executing specific interventions tailored to each person's needs. In addition, the DSP will be required to provide emergency first aid when necessary and assist individuals in obtaining medical attention from qualified professionals. The role involves using a personal vehicle during work hours to carry out services, which may include running errands and transporting individuals as needed. Responsibilities

  • Teach and assist persons served by Hope House Foundation in completing activities associated with a daily living routine.
  • Assist individuals with cooking, cleaning, laundry, hygiene, meal planning and preparation, grocery shopping, banking, and transportation.
  • Provide guidance and behavioral support, implementing behavioral support plans/interventions as described for each individual.
  • Provide emergency first aid and assist individuals in obtaining prompt medical attention when necessary.
  • Attend monthly team meetings, quarterly agency-wide meetings, and other training sessions as defined by the team leader.
  • Run errands outside of the office when needed and test fire alarm systems.

Requirements

  • Willingness to attend Red Cross First Aid training, which will be paid for by the organization.
  • Willingness to attend Medication Management training, which will also be paid for by the organization.
  • Desire to learn and grow professionally.
  • Ability to carry out the physical requirements of the position, including lifting up to 50 pounds, ascending and descending stairs, and pushing/pulling wheelchairs.

Nice-to-haves
