About the position

The Public Affairs—Communications Planner (Digital Media) position at BTAS is a full-time role based at the Los Angeles Air Force Base, El Segundo, CA. This position requires a Secret clearance with the ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of seven years of experience in a program, functional, or staff organization at a Department of Defense (DoD) space-related agency or center, along with five years of specialized experience in communications planning. The role supports high-level executives, including the SSC Commander and Program Executive Officer for Space, in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. The Communications Planner will be responsible for driving day-to-day operations of digital media channels while developing long-term strategies and campaigns. This includes crafting compelling messages and communication products, utilizing various digital media technologies and platforms. The planner will lead and manage multiple strategic events and functions, ensuring that all communication efforts align with the organizational business strategy and effectively reach key stakeholders. In addition to overseeing social media and digital content, the planner will provide strategic counsel on messaging, brand guidelines, and publication effectiveness. The role requires collaboration with public affairs representatives and program offices to execute integrated communication campaigns across multiple platforms, including conferences, media relations, and social media. The planner will also be responsible for ensuring that all content is compliant with DoD standards and is engaging for both internal and external audiences. The position does not have supervisory responsibilities, but it does require a proactive approach to identifying creative solutions that support key priorities within the organization. The successful candidate will also be expected to conduct research, draft articles, speeches, and other communication materials, ensuring that all communications are timely, necessary, and substantively correct.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage multiple strategic events and functions.
  • Assist with Strategic Communication Activities.
  • Craft integrated communication campaigns based on organizational business strategy.
  • Leverage communication channels to execute campaigns across multiple platforms.
  • Provide strategic counsel on digital content, including language, tone, and messaging.
  • Oversee all aspects of social media and digital channel content.
  • Ensure synchronization of strategic message planning efforts.
  • Align and collaborate with public affairs representatives and program offices.
  • Identify creative solutions to support Field Command and program key priorities.
  • Provide analysis and assessments to ensure quality communication products.
  • Support governance for communications through standards and quality measures.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for digital media and marketing trends.
  • Research, draft, and edit articles, speeches, and testimony on Center activities.
  • Select and recommend communication channels relevant to stakeholders.
  • Ensure all content is vetted for public release and compliant with DOD standards.
  • Prepare and arrange graphics to support presentations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in any field.
  • Seven years' experience in a program, functional or staff organization at a DoD Space related agency or Center.
  • Five years specialized experience in Communications Planning activities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications/Public Affairs or related field.
  • Five or more years of experience in digital communications, public relations, or marketing.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in social media marketing for a government/military organization or commercial brand.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with the ability to synthesize complex materials.
  • Familiarity with AP style.
  • Experience in developing tools and best practices for metrics and analytics.
  • SSC (previously SMC) experience and knowledge of military, Government, Space & Defense, and technology industry.
  • Experience in design/video editing/Photoshop.
  • AFPIMS experience.
  • Professional Accreditation in Communications/Public Affairs or related field.
