About The Position

The Public Affairs Specialist/Deputy Chief Communications Officer (DCCO) at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for overseeing the public affairs and communications program within the Mid-South Health Care Network. This role involves planning, designing, and executing programs to inform the public about the organization's services and activities, while also serving as a key member of the Network leadership team.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must meet time-in-grade requirements for GS-12 position.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11 level in the Federal Service.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in public speaking and media relations.
  • Knowledge of health administration practices.
  • Familiarity with web content management and design tools.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for internal and external communications.
  • Applies public relations, media, and health administration skills to ensure effective resource utilization.
  • Facilitates communication with external and internal stakeholders.
  • Plans, initiates, and implements comprehensive campaigns to enhance public understanding of the Network's programs.
  • Develops written materials to convey information about complex programs to the public.
  • Serves as a consultant to the web program manager regarding content for the VISN 9 intranet and internet web pages.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with news media and specialized groups.
  • Develops and disseminates management reports and oversees public relations and consumer affairs systems.
  • Serves as a spokesperson for the Network Director in interactions with various stakeholders.
  • Participates in public speaking engagements and coordinates public events for the Network director.
  • Provides oversight and support to the network web program manager regarding web content.
  • Prepares, edits, and rewrites original papers, articles, or reports for distribution.
  • Advises authors on tailoring writing to reach intended audiences.
  • Performs research to verify the accuracy of references for publications.
  • Coordinates and ensures information is current and viable for the web.
