About the position

The Public Affairs Specialist will be responsible for establishing and maintaining communication between Federal agencies and the public, including various internal and external audiences. This role involves developing informational materials, planning and executing communication programs, and evaluating their effectiveness in promoting agency goals. The position is a detail/temporary promotion opportunity that may become permanent without further competition if the position is vacant.

Responsibilities

  • Capture photos, videos, and design visually appealing materials to accompany written communication materials.
  • Assist with and sometimes lead special events, ceremonies, tours, and other activities to promote agency programs.
  • Research, write, edit, and distribute communication products such as news stories, releases, newsletters, and reports for various target audiences.
  • Engage and communicate with internal and external stakeholders, including media and community partners, in a professional manner.
  • Develop strategic communication plans or campaigns in coordination with public affairs colleagues and subject matter experts.
  • Use independent judgment to prioritize assignments and make sound decisions regarding tasks and projects.
  • Analyze written, oral, and statistical information to create digestible content for various audiences.
  • Review, edit, and publish updates to internal and external web-based platforms.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the normal line of progression for the occupation.
  • Experience in collecting, preparing, and disseminating information concerning various programs of the organization.
  • Experience in developing and conducting public affairs programs for larger organizational segments.
  • Ability to draft news stories/media releases and provide media escort during visits to the organization.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with reviewing, editing, and publishing updates to web-based platforms.
  • Attention to detail is a must.
