About the position

The Public Affairs Specialist position within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at the United States Coast Guard (USCG) focuses on planning, coordinating, and supervising national community relations programs. The role aims to enhance public understanding of Coast Guard objectives and missions through effective communication and outreach efforts. The specialist will liaise with various stakeholders, manage public awareness campaigns, and support the Coast Guard's art program, contributing to the overall mission of the organization.

Responsibilities

• Assist in planning, coordinating, and supervising national Coast Guard community relations programs.
• Liaise with stakeholder groups and national organizations to disseminate information and materials.
• Furnish speakers, exhibits, equipment, and ceremonial units for events.
• Proactively identify noteworthy missions and achievements of the Coast Guard.
• Serve as a liaison to federal, state, and local organizations for event administration.
• Coordinate with the Governmental and Public Affairs team for media engagement and communication materials.
• Research and prepare written materials, including public inquiries and online content.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• Must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal sector.
• Experience drafting press releases, social media posts, and presentations for dissemination.
• Experience collaborating on public outreach initiatives and programs.
• Experience coordinating public awareness campaigns to gather information.
• Experience liaising with media and trusted organizations.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in crisis communications principles and practices.
• Knowledge of digital communication techniques, including social media outlets.
