About the position

The Office of the Public Defender, District 14 in Cumberland County, is seeking a qualified individual to join our team as a Public Defender Legal Assistant. This position is essential in providing secretarial support to the office attorneys, ensuring that the legal processes run smoothly and efficiently. The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks that are crucial to the daily operations of the office. These tasks include assisting clients and attorneys as requested, performing word processing, typing forms, filing documents, and managing incoming communications. The role also involves answering and screening incoming calls, opening, screening, and distributing mail, and performing other duties as assigned by the attorneys. In this position, the Legal Assistant will be expected to demonstrate a strong understanding of office practices and procedures, as well as legal terminology. The ability to accurately type legal documents and maintain organized records is essential. The candidate should be proficient in using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, and possess the skills necessary to operate office equipment such as printers, copiers, and multi-line telephone systems. The role requires a keen attention to detail, as well as the ability to handle communications with discretion and professionalism. The Public Defender Legal Assistant will also need to develop a general knowledge of the office's role and mission, as well as its relationship with other judicial offices. This understanding will enable the assistant to provide basic information and instructions regarding programs and office procedures to clients and other stakeholders. Requirements

  • Ability to type with accuracy and speed.
  • Experience in answering a multi-line telephone system.
  • Ability to screen communications and route them appropriately.
  • Strong spelling and grammar skills.
