About the position

The Public Defender Social Worker provides essential services to clients of the Washtenaw County Office of the Public Defender, assisting both adults and children involved in the criminal justice, juvenile justice, and child welfare systems. This role involves case management, mental health and substance use assessments, and collaboration with attorneys to develop defense strategies. The position requires a strong commitment to serving indigent clients and maintaining confidentiality while working in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist attorneys with developing defense strategies or mitigation for clients in criminal, delinquency, and child welfare matters.
  • Present information, prepare reports, and provide expert testimony for court at the direction of an attorney.
  • Provide case management services and act as a liaison to community organizations and residential programs.
  • Evaluate assigned clients to determine the level and type of assistance required and make referrals to appropriate agencies.
  • Prepare reports and maintain case notes for attorneys and staff.
  • Provide psycho/social assessments of clients in various settings as requested by attorneys.
  • Facilitate communication between clients and Public Defender staff, medical providers, and community contacts.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with area resource agencies.
  • Maintain timely documentation, including case plans and service statistics.
  • Assist with staff and intern training while supervising social work interns.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Social Work.
  • Fully licensed Social Worker or will be fully licensed within six months of employment.
  • Two years of experience providing services to clients, preferably those involved in the legal system.
  • Superior writing and presentation skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals and groups.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in case management and community resource coordination.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures related to County programs or resources.
