About the position

The part-time Public Health Specialist (Analyst) supports the Epidemiology Division by performing data collection, statistical analysis, and health informatics. The role involves working with both small and large datasets, utilizing Business Intelligence (BI) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for analytics and visualization, and contributing to public health projects through research and writing.

Responsibilities

  • Support and perform analyses of surveillance data and other data sources to characterize and study trends.
  • Perform ad-hoc data analysis and develop/deploy scripts in R, Python, and MS Excel.
  • Conduct analysis and visualization in Business Intelligence (BI) tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
  • Provide regular updates and summary reports on relevant public health projects.
  • Apply Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools such as Esri ArcGIS Pro to visualize and analyze geographic distribution of diseases and conditions.
  • Support the development of evaluation strategies to monitor the quality and completeness of surveillance data.
  • Conduct and support epidemiological investigations and scientific manuscript research and writing.
  • Assist with coordinating and conducting case investigation and contact tracing activities.
  • Advise partners on measures to protect the community and help design health education materials.
  • Support emergency preparedness/response activities.
  • Assist with grants research and proposal writing as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison with other organizations that collect and/or possess data of interest to the City of Norwalk.
  • Participate in Epidemiology Division planning and support project initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Health Informatics, Health Sciences, Statistics, Business, or related field.
  • One or more years of work experience in public health research, surveillance, evaluation, or data analysis, or a Master's Degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics/Statistics, Mathematics, Public Health (MPH), or related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of the cause, transmission, treatment, and prevention of communicable disease.
  • Knowledge of methods of public health surveillance and disease outbreak investigations.
  • Knowledge of public health factors that affect health, and the social determinants of health.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and policies regarding the reporting and control of disease.
  • Knowledge of data quality assurance techniques.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Business Intelligence (BI) systems such as Power BI and/or Tableau.
  • Experience with Geographic Information System (GIS) software such as Esri ArcGIS Pro.
