About the position

The Public Information Officer - Assistant to the City Manager is a key role within the City of Henderson, NC, responsible for managing communication between the city and the public. This position requires advanced interpersonal and communication skills to effectively convey complex information, prepare reports, and contribute to strategic planning. The officer will serve as a spokesperson for the city, ensuring transparency and accuracy in public communications while collaborating with various city departments and officials.

Responsibilities

  • Communicates complex or technical information to the public
  • Writing and issuing news releases
  • Collaborating with City departments to produce marketing materials
  • Creating and drafting content for the City's social media platforms
  • Serving as the City's source of information about programs, policies, and activities
  • Assisting with proactive media outreach
  • Acting as the City's spokesperson for media inquiries
  • Providing timely information to the public during critical incidents
  • Serving as intergovernmental coordinator by disseminating information to department directors
  • Attending City Council meetings and acting as a technical management advisor
  • Conferring with the City Manager on administrative matters and making recommendations
  • Acting as a liaison with Department Directors in the absence of the City Manager
  • Assisting with citizen inquiries or complaints
  • Performing other duties including special projects as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Administration, Business Administration, Political Science, or related field
  • At least 2 years of experience in Social Media Management
  • Executive/Director/Manager level experience in the public sector or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license
  • Knowledge of municipal operations and public administration principles
