About the position

The Public Information Officer at the United Nations Secretariat plays a crucial role in developing and implementing communication strategies for the Department of Global Communications. This position involves leading initiatives that promote the UN's objectives, managing public relations, and enhancing outreach efforts to various stakeholders. The officer will work closely with different departments and entities to ensure cohesive messaging and effective communication across platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategy, planning, development, and implementation of communication strategies for substantive entities.
  • Provide advice and expertise on communication methods to managers and public information staff.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with key constituencies to support promotional objectives.
  • Prepare and oversee the creation of diverse information communications products.
  • Coordinate material for UN newsletters, reports, and publications, editing drafts as necessary.
  • Manage the production of communications materials such as videos and audiovisual content.
  • Organize media coverage, briefings, interviews, and events for the organization.
  • Build information networks and maintain publicly accessible information materials.
  • Manage social media channels to increase audience engagement and impact.
  • Coordinate and mentor junior public information staff on specific projects.

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, or related field.
  • A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, or related areas.
  • At least two years of experience in reporting on complex finance and investment topics.
  • Fluency in English is required; knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
