About the position

The Public Information Officer (PIO) for Montgomery County is responsible for managing public relations operations across various departments, including media relations, marketing, and communications. This role involves developing strategies to enhance the department's image, overseeing the production of promotional materials, and acting as a spokesperson for the county during emergencies. The PIO will also maintain relationships with media outlets and coordinate community partnership projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategies to produce and maintain a positive image of the department.
  • Oversee public relations activities and identify opportunities for strategic collaboration to improve department communications.
  • Write and edit promotional materials and literature.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with senior management of area media outlets.
  • Arrange interviews and coach respondents for media interactions.
  • Act as spokesperson and provide interviews as needed.
  • Coordinate the production of newsletters, annual reports, videos, public service announcements, and advertising materials.
  • Maintain office systems to support program goals.
  • Plan, train, and develop policies in public relations areas.
  • Participate in overall agency planning and procedure development as needed.

Requirements

  • 1 year of experience in public relations or a related field at a senior level.
  • Strong writing and editing skills for media documents and promotional materials.
  • Experience in managing media relations and public communications.
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic communication plans.
  • Proficiency in social media management and content creation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with emergency management communications.
  • Familiarity with FEMA and emergency messaging protocols.
  • Knowledge of community partnership development.
