About the position

The Public Information Officer (PIO) plays a crucial role in managing public relations for the Department of Energy's Defense Related Uranium Mines (DRUM) programs. This position involves researching, developing, and coordinating public relations strategies to foster effective communication and education with the public, media, and various stakeholders. The PIO will be responsible for creating informative materials, attending community meetings, and preparing reports for tribal and federal agencies, all while ensuring compliance with relevant laws and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Research, develop, write, and coordinate public relations activities for the DOE - DRUM programs.
  • Develop a work plan to improve public relations and foster effective communication with the public and media.
  • Create and coordinate the production of public relations materials such as newsletters, press releases, and educational handouts.
  • Educate public schools through STEM events and conferences.
  • Attend chapter meetings to report on program activities as needed, with Navajo speaking skills being a plus.
  • Set up meetings and facilities for public engagement.
  • Travel to various locations within and surrounding the Navajo Nation for outreach and reporting purposes.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for tribal and federal agencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Mass Media Communications, Marketing, or a closely related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of public administration processes and public information techniques.
  • Familiarity with Navajo Nation, Federal, and State laws governing tribal operations.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Navajo speaking ability is a plus.
