About the position

The Public Information Officer position is an entry to mid-level role focused on managing communications between Sarasota County Government and various media outlets. The role involves implementing media engagement strategies, responding to media inquiries, and facilitating accurate information dissemination to support the organization's mission and goals. The officer will also assist in coordinating media events and maintaining relationships with local reporters.

Responsibilities

  • Implement media engagement plans and strategies.
  • Write and distribute media releases, alerts, pitches, and talking points.
  • Respond to media queries and facilitate media pitches.
  • Provide on-site media relations support for news conferences and events.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with area reporters and media outlets.
  • Monitor media for trending stories and provide news clips to leadership.
  • Assist in coordinating the county's PIO Network and schedule regular meetings.
  • Maintain a working database of area reporters and PIO contacts.
  • Participate in training to stay current on crisis communications skills.

Requirements

  • Minimum of an Associate's Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field, or significant related experience.
  • For Communications Associate II: BS Degree in relevant fields with three years of experience, or MS/MA/MBA with two years of experience.
  • Bilingual skills are highly preferred.
  • Professional accreditation in related fields is preferred.

  • Bilingual proficiency is highly preferred.
  • Professional accreditation and/or certification in related career field are highly preferred.
