About the position

As a Computer Scientist specializing in Cybersecurity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you will play a crucial role in safeguarding public health through the integration of computer science theory with emerging informatics and technology standards. Your work will directly support the CDC's mission to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of systems, networks, and data. This position is part of a temporary hiring initiative, allowing the CDC to fill various vacancies across multiple locations and grade levels (GS-12 to GS-15). In this role, you will be responsible for the planning, analysis, development, implementation, maintenance, and enhancement of information system security program policies. You will serve as an expert in the field, utilizing your in-depth knowledge of computer science to assess and improve the CDC's IT security programs, ensuring compliance with cybersecurity plans and policies. Your contributions will help promote sound security principles and enhance the overall effectiveness of the CDC's information systems. The position requires a strong foundation in computer science, with a focus on the theoretical aspects that apply to the representation and transformation of information structures. You will be expected to review and advise on IT security programs, ensuring they align with business requirements and effectively safeguard the CDC's critical data and systems. Responsibilities

  • Integrate computer science theory with informatics and technology standards to support public health practices.
  • Ensure confidentiality, integrity, and availability of systems, networks, and data through security program policies.
  • Serve as an expert in computer science, focusing on information structure representation and transformation.
  • Review IT security programs for compliance with cybersecurity plans and policies, ensuring alignment with business requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field with 30 semester hours in mathematics, statistics, and computer science, including calculus.
  • For GS-12: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11, promoting security awareness and sound security principles.
  • For GS-13: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-12, advising on information security support programs and initiatives.
  • For GS-14: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-13, providing advisory services on data systems and technologies.
  • For GS-15: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-14, leading the development and evaluation of health informatics and IT systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with public health informatics and data management.
