About the position

The Public Relations and Communications Specialist is responsible for managing and promoting the reputation and image of Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). This role involves leading external PR activities, coordinating internal communications, and providing PR counsel to various programs and departments. The specialist will utilize various media channels to enhance the college's visibility and engagement with the community.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the College's external PR activities to promote a positive reputation.
  • Develop PR strategies and write stories, including news releases and public service announcements.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with media outlets and ensure their needs are met.
  • Coordinate internal communications to support a strong College brand.
  • Contribute to DMACC's social media channels, including Twitter and LinkedIn.
  • Provide PR counsel to programs and departments for public announcements and enrollment improvement.
  • Manage media and PR tracking, including updating media lists and providing PR value reports.
  • Collaborate with the digital content coordinator and stay current on PR trends.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communications, public relations, or marketing.
  • Three years of broadcast/print news reporting or public relations experience.
  • Strong writing and proofreading skills with knowledge of AP Style.
  • Experience utilizing Adobe Photoshop and photo experience with digital cameras.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and manage time effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish professional relationships with diverse individuals.
  • Knowledge of current social media and media monitoring software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in a communications-related field.
  • APR industry designation.
  • Demonstrated ability to function autonomously with minimal supervision.

Benefits

  • Starting salary range: $65,412 - $76,955 based on experience and qualifications.
