About the position

Baker Botts, a leading international law firm, is seeking a Public Relations Manager to join our Client Development team. This position is integral to the firm's visibility and reputational planning, particularly in the Corporate and Global Projects departments, which are recognized for their market-leading practices in the energy and technology sectors. The Public Relations Manager will report directly to the Director of Communications & Media and will be responsible for implementing proactive media relations strategies that enhance the firm's brand and increase its profile in various media outlets. This role requires a self-motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and has a proven track record in media relations, whether from an agency, in-house, or journalism background. The Public Relations Manager will assist in developing national PR strategies that focus on the firm's energy and technology practices, ensuring that the firm is well-positioned in the business, trade, and legal media. Responsibilities include conducting media outreach, developing and implementing communications plans, and managing relationships with reporters and media outlets. The role also involves planning and executing thought leadership initiatives and handling media inquiries, which may include acting as a spokesperson for the firm when necessary. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, a high level of organizational ability, and the flexibility to work additional hours as needed to meet deadlines. This full-time, exempt position offers the option to work from any of the firm's U.S. offices and includes excellent benefits. Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director in developing proactive media relations strategies and implementing the firm's media relations program.
  • Develop and execute national PR strategies for the firm's energy and technology sector practices.
  • Conduct regular media outreach for lawyers, including media pitching, bylined articles, and press releases.
  • Plan and execute practice group and industry communications activities, including thought leadership initiatives.
  • Handle media calls and act as the spokesperson for the firm as directed by the Director of Communications.
  • Develop and write press releases and assist with deal announcements.
  • Maintain and track editorial calendars of national, local, and industry media outlets.
  • Develop and maintain a firm media contact list.
  • Manage relationships with vendors, verify invoices, and ensure quality and accuracy of work performed.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned by the Director.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communication Studies or a related field.
  • 7+ years of related experience in media relations, preferably within a PR agency, professional services environment, or top-tier news organization.
  • Strong background in media relations or journalism with knowledge of social media and blogs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience managing projects and deadlines with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong skills in written and verbal communication, with the ability to work well with lawyers and other professionals.
  • High level of organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office; experience with InterAction, Adobe Acrobat, Foundation, and Vuture is a plus.
