About the position

The Public Relations Specialist at the Smithsonian Institution plays a crucial role in enhancing public awareness of the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives (SLA) and its mission. This position is responsible for implementing and executing external communications and public outreach strategies, including marketing campaigns, press releases, and social media initiatives, to foster engagement and partnerships. The specialist will work closely with leadership to develop innovative marketing strategies that promote SLA's programs and initiatives, ensuring alignment with the institution's brand and communication goals.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Director and staff to create SLA's brand and develop innovative marketing campaigns.
  • Execute internal and external communication plans and make day-to-day decisions on marketing communications.
  • Analyze public perceptions and evaluate the effectiveness of marketing and advertising plans.
  • Develop and direct the brand strategy for all collateral, ensuring alignment with SLA's identity.
  • Manage creative teams and oversee design concepts and market research.
  • Contribute marketing expertise to the development of SLA exhibitions and public programs.
  • Serve as the Public Information Officer, representing SLA at institutional meetings.
  • Coordinate with other PIOs and develop public affairs promotion projects.
  • Respond to information requests from media and the public, ensuring accurate and timely communication.
  • Develop media briefs, talking points, and write/edit communications materials.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of production methods for developing written materials such as news releases and marketing communications.
  • Experience with news media and social media tools to advance news stories.
  • Skill in conducting oral presentations and presenting information clearly to various audiences.
  • Understanding of SLA's collections and services to enhance public understanding.
  • Expertise in developing content for digital media platforms and strategic knowledge of emerging trends.
  • Advanced skills in conducting market research and preparing reports on key findings.

Nice-to-haves
