About the position

The Public Safety Communications Dispatcher plays a critical role in the Department of Emergency Management by receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls. This position requires effective communication and coordination with police, fire, and emergency medical services to ensure timely responses to incidents. Dispatchers work in a fast-paced environment, operating 24/7, and must be prepared to handle various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Receive emergency and non-emergency calls and gather, evaluate, prioritize, and document information from callers.
• Dispatch police, fire, and EMS field units to specific locations using a computer-aided dispatch system and two-way radio.
• Evaluate incoming reports of emergencies and transmit complete information to field personnel.
• Monitor and maintain the status of incidents and records of dispatched emergency service personnel.
• Receive and disseminate information from law enforcement and emergency service networks while maintaining confidentiality.
• Maintain familiarity with area geography and recognize hazards to public safety.
• Respond to inquiries regarding police, fire, or emergency medical services and provide appropriate referrals.

Requirements

• Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination).
• Two years of experience in a public contact position providing information or service.

Nice-to-haves

• Completion of 30 semester units or 45 quarter units of coursework from an accredited college or university may substitute for 1 year of the required experience.
