About the position

The position involves answering and prioritizing requests for emergency services and complaints related to various incidents such as fires, accidents, disturbances, and criminal activities. The dispatcher assesses alarm activations, dispatches emergency responders, and ensures compliance with communication and record management regulations. The role may also include informal training for new staff and acting in a lead capacity when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Answer and prioritize requests for emergency services and complaints.
  • Assess fire and security alarm activations and dispatch emergency responders as needed.
  • Recognize alarm malfunctions and facilitate fixes.
  • Determine the nature, location, and priority of emergencies and enter information into the computer-aided dispatch system.
  • Retrieve and enter data into the department's records management system.
  • Access state and federal crime files and provide information to law enforcement personnel as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations for communication and record management.
  • Assist with and provide informal training to officers, part-time employees, and cadets.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (HSED or GED).
  • Proficient communication skills.
  • Maintains a high degree of professionalism.
  • Demonstrates time management and priority setting skills.
  • Demonstrates a high commitment to quality.

Nice-to-haves

  • 1 year communications, switchboard, dispatching or related experience.
  • Public safety telecommunications certificate.
  • 2 years of telecommunications experience.
  • Advanced public safety telecommunications certificate or communications training officer certificate.
